Benches for Boys and Girls Club

On Saturday, April 2nd (2017), club members Dee Boudreaux, Pam Vidrine, Shelly Fontenot, Presdident Garett Duplachain, Ryan Duplachain, Rev. Perry Hubbs, and Dirk Boudreaux gathered together to build four benches for the Opelousas Boys and Girls Club.  The members enjoyed a fun morning of carpentry work, painting, and fellowship preparing the benches.  

Opelousas Safe Halloween - Monday, October 31, Le Vieux Village

The Opelousas Kiwanis Club will once again participate in the Opelousas Safe Halloween event.  This year, the club will provide colorful orange bags with the Kiwanis logo for all of the kids to collect their Halloween candy in.  Please come out and join us for this annual event!

Kiwanis Jamboree a success!

What a successful return of the Opelousas Kiwanis John Bradley Memorial Jamboree in Opelousas last week.  There were two great games between Northwest High and Lagrange, and Opelousas Catholic and Westminster.  Although there was rain earlier in the day, the skies cleared and it was a wonderful night for football.  The club also recognized the family of former club member and jamboree chairman Wyvos Edmond for his 40 years in the club and over 25 years as chairman of the football jamboree. 

Thank you to the St. Landry Professionals for selling jambalaya at the game, as well as Kona Ice with snow cones and Raising Cane's for the tea and lemonade.  A special thank you to all of the advertisers in the Kiwanis game program and for being a part of our event!

It's Jamboree Time!

The annual game is only a week away.  At the recent meeting, our own club member, Vinnie Bullera, who is also the Westminster coach, took home the annual crying towel award. Vinnie shared a story about ordering size 7 and 8 shoes, and the vendor if he was getting this for his Jr. High team.  Vinnie said no, it was for his offensive linemen!



Scholarship Recipient

At a recent meeting, Dirk Boudreaux, club president, presented a check to Scholarship winner Jonah Manuel of Westminster Christina.  Jonah is attending Delgado Community College in New Orleans and will be playing baseball there.  Pictured with Dirk and Jonah is Jonah's father, Barry Manuel.  Good luck Jonah!

At the meeting of 7/20/16, Dirk Boudreaux, club president, presented a check to Scholarship winner Aaron Whipp of Opelousas Catholic.  Aaron will attend LSU Eunice in the fall and hopes to continue his studies at the University of Louisiana.  Good luck Aaron.  Pictured is Dirk Boudreaux, Aaron Whipp, and his father Troy Whipp.


Scholarship Donation

The Opelousas Kiwanis Club contributed to the South Louisiana Community College Foundation to fund an annual scholarship for a resident of Opelousas.  Pictured below are club president Dirk Boudreaux, Lana Fontenot, Director of Development for SLCC, Erika Milton, Administrator at the Opelousas T.H. Boys and Girls Club Donation

This is Dirk's third term as president after serving in 2005 and 2010.  Garrett served as president in 2009.


Plaque of Appreciation

At the meeting of September 30, 2015, Dirk Boudreaux presented a plaque of appreciation to Rev. Benny Reppond for his service as club president during the 2014-15 Kiwanis year.

Reverend Benny Repond was installed as the new President of the Opelousas Kiwanis Club.  This in not Rev. Benny's first time as President as he last served in the 1990's.  Congratulations Rev. Benny and good luck.

Jamboree huge success
Thank you to everyone that came out and enjoyed some great football at our Jamboree this past Friday night.  We were blessed with great weather, great crowds, and great local football.  Final results will be in soon, but we are very pleased with the preliminary results and thank everyone for their participation.

Badon wins inaugural Crying Towel

At the August 21st meeting, Westminster Football Coach and Club Member Tommy Badon was the winner of the inaugural Crying Towel awarded by the Opelousas Kiwanis Club.  Coach Badon shared some quite colorful stories and was well prepared for the "contest".  Congratulations Coach Badon.


Kiwanis Jamboree
The Opelousas Kiwanis Club's annual football jamboree in memory of John S. Bradley has been set for Friday, August 30th, at Donald Gardner Stadium.  The event will begins at 6:00 pm with three games being played.  Ad sales are currently underway for the Jamboree program.  A coach's meeting has been set for Monday, July 29th at 6:00 pm to set the agenda and opponents for the game.

Relay for Life

On May 4th, the Kiwanis Club, with assistance from Aaron and Flo from Westminister Christian Acadamy, participated in the Relay for Life in Opelousas.  Thank you to all those members, guests, and friends that helped make Relay for Life a success this year.


Breakfast with Santa

On Wednesday, December 5th, members of the Opelousas Kiwanis Club participated in the Opelousas Area Cerebral Palsy Center annual Breakfast with Santa.  In addition to providing a donation, club members assisted as waiters, bus boys, and whatever other duties that are required.  Thank you club members Dee Boudreaux, Scott Pitre (and wife Darla), Perry Hubbs, Dirk Boudreaux, Casey Boudreaux for volunteering.  The club is proud to say that this will be the 8th annual event, and we have been there from the beginning!!  It's not too late to help.  If you are interested in donating, send your donations to Breakfast with Santa, PO Box 70, Opelousas, LA  70571.  Pictured below is Rev. Lighting of the Village - Opelousas

On Friday, December 7th, the Opelousas Kiwanis Club will be serving free jambalaya to visitors at the annual lighting of Le Vieux Village in Opelousas.  This Christmas tradition includes the beautiful lights, christmas carols, and local merchants to assist you with your holiday shopping.  Join us from 5:30 to 8:00.  we hope to see you there.

Thanksgiving activities

During the recent Thanskgiving holiday, the Opelousas Kiwanis Club helped three local organizations with donations.  The receipients were ICONS food bank, The New Life Center, and The Opelousas Lighthouse Mission.  The club was able to provide cash, food, and supplies to the organizations.

Special Recognition

New Club Member

At the meeting of September 12th, the club was happy to welcome Tommy Badon as a new member of the club. Coach Badon, as most of know him, is the athletic director and football coach at Westminster Christian Academy here in Opelousas. Welcome to the club once again.

Kiwanis Jamboree - Thursday - August 23rd

Please join us on August 23rd for the annual Kiwanis John Ed Bradley Memorial Jamboree. The event will be held at Donald Garner Stadium and begin at 5:30 pm. In the first game, St. Edmunds will take on Hanson Memorial, followed by Westminster playing Vermillion Catholic and the last game will be Opelousas Catholic playing Ascension Episcopal. Tickets are available at the gate.

The club is also holding a raffle in conjunction with the jamboree. Prizes include an LSU bench, a night's stay at Evangeline Downs Hotel and dinner at Blackberry's, a $100 restaurant gift card, ice chests with drinks, Raising Cane's gift basket including a $50 gift card, and over 50 additional prizes. Tickets are only $1.00 available from any club member, Donuts Galore, and at the jamboree.

State Treasurer John Kennedy visits club

At its meeting of August 15th, Louisiana State Treasurer visited the Opelousas Kiwanis Club. Mr. Kennedy focused on the upcoming issues concerning financing health coverage in our state. He took the time to explain the problem and some of his ideas to help the state manage the expense. We wish to thank Mr. Kennedy for his visit and very informative address.


IceGator Fever

While it's not quite hockey time yet, the General Manager Louis Dumont and coach Kevin "Killer" Kamiski of the Louisiana IceGators visited the club to talk about their organization. Both Louis and Kevin played professional hockey, with Kevin having played in the NHL with the Washington Capitals for most of his NHL time. The club members asked a lot of questions about the organization and structure. We thank both of them for visiting with us today (7/18/12) and good luck to the IceGators this season. Scholarship Winners

At our meeting of June 6th, 2012, our final scholarship receipient Sarah Rozas visited the club to accept her scholarship from the Opelousas Kiwanis Club. Sarah was a graduate of St. Ed's in Eunice.


At our recent meeting, Elisabeth Bragg and Brooke Thompson visited with the club to receive their scholarship and tell us about their college plans. It was a bit ironic that they both plan to pursue a degree in physical/occupational therapy. Congratulations girls, and good luck in the fall. Scholarship Winners

The club recently awarded scholarship to three recent high school graduates. The winners were Elisabeth Bragg, Opelousas Catholic High School, Sara Rozas, St. Edmonds Catholic High School, and Brooke Thompson, Westminster Christian School. Congratulations to all of our winners.

Visit from District Governor

At our meeting of March 14th, LAMSTN District Governor Greg Beard visited the club to outline the five things that our club could do to finish out the club year strong. He also promoted the upcoming international convention in New Orleans and the August district convention in Lafayette. Thanks Greg for visiting our club! Halloween at Le Vieux Village

Kiwanis Club Scholarship Recipient

Pictured below is Jordan Knecht (middle), along with her mother Kim and Club President Karen Christian.  Jordan, who graduated from Westminister Christian Academy, was the recepient of the 2011 Kiwanis Scholarship for WCA.  Karen plans to attend UL with a major in nursing and plans to become a nurse practitioner in neo-natal care.  Good luck to Jordan from all of us in Kiwanis.


New UL Coach Mark Hudspeth visits Kiwanis

Coach Hudspeth visited the Opelouas Kiwanis Club's weekly luncheon and spoke about the new direction of the UL football program.  We appreciate Coach Hudspeth visiting with our club and we wish him and the Cajuns good luck in the upcoming football season. 

Boys and Girls Club

At the meeting of March 30th, the Opelousas Kiwanis Club presented a check for $250.00 to representatives of the Opelousas Boys and Girls Club.  The funds donated will become part of their current fundraising campaign.

Christmas Baskets

Club members Karen Christian, Gene Kidder, Scott Pitre, Rev. Perry Hubbs, Dirk Boudreaux, and Wyvos Edmons met at Piggly Wiggly a few days before Christmas to pick up Christmas dinners for needy families throughout Opelousas.  The club distributied 30 baskets during this service project.


Gumbo Time at Opelousas Lighting of the Village

Your Kiwanis Club provided free gumbo to residents attending the annual chrismas ligthing at Le Vieux Village.  The pot held approximately 30 quarts of gumbo, and we served every last drop.  Special thanks to our chef, Don Buller, and club members Dee Boudreaux and Shirley Marcus for putting the event together. 




Kiwanis provides Thanksgiving baskets
Just before Thanksgiving, members of your club met at Piggly Wiggly to pick up 30 boxes of Thanksgiving supplies to distribute to families in the Opelousas area.

Kiwanis donates to St. Landry Parish Crimestoppers
At the meeting of November 10, President Karen Christian presented a check in the amount of $250 to Jimmy Darbonne with the St. Landry Parish Crimestoppers.  These funds will help provide reward money for tips that lead to solved crimes.

Kiwanis participates at Opelousas Safe Halloween for Kids
On October 28th, the club sponsored a station at the City of Opelosuas Safe Halloween for Kids at Le Vieux Village.  Thank you to new club members Dee Boudreaux and Shirley Marcus for decorating the space.  Our club members distributed over 1500 bags of candy to a crowd estimated at over 2000 people.

Scholarship presentation to TH Harris - Opelousas Campus

At the meeting of August 18th, Mr. Willie Smith the administrator of T.H. Harris Technical College joined Wyvos Edmond and Dirk Boudreaux for a scholarship presentation.  The $1,250 scholarship will be awarded to a student from the Opelousas area to help defray their educational costs.

New Member Initiation and Officer Installation - September 30, 2009

On Wednesday, September 30th, the club held induction of new members and the installation of new officers.  Presiding over the ceremonies was Claudia Hall, past Lt. Governor of District 7 and current District Foundation representative.  Although they are technically not new members, the club did formally install Frank Cuccio and Anne Jones as members of the club.  Also being inducted as the officers for the 2009-10 club year were Karen Christian (President Elect), Wyvos Edmond (Secretary), Gene Kidder (Treasurer), Dirk Boudraux (President), and Garrett Duplechain (Immediate Past President).  Approximately 25 members and guests attended the evening event.

Kiwanis Internantional service project day - April 4, 2009

On Saturday, April 4, President Garrent Duplechain and members Dirk Boudreaux, Rev. Perry Hubbs, and Scott Pitre gathered at the Opelousas park to build four picnic tables for the Opelousas park system.  The tables were distributed throughout the park system for the park visitors to enjoy.
